Security in the Microsoft Realm

This past September, VerisVisalign’s CEO, Deborah Moses Elton, facilitated a key session with leading technology experts at The Philadelphia Technology Leadership Virtual Summit.  The annual symposium is the region’s premier single-day event designed for the IT executive community.  As a remote conference this year, the day was packed with valuable opportunities to network, collaborate, and share knowledge through peer-led keynotes, panel discussions, breakouts, and networking sessions.

The panel discussion, Security in the Microsoft Realm, featured Susan Denchak, Head of IT, Radius Health; Kathy Junod, CIO, Greene Tweed; and Kelley Kleinfelder, CIO & SVP of IT at SDI.  Each panelist represented different industries—from pharma and healthcare to manufacturing and digital supply chain services—as well as different infrastructure environments, security and use of the cloud.

This topic was critical and highly relevant considering the now dominant, virtual work climate. Ms. Moses Elton pointed out that according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, 35% of firms think that 40% or more of workers will remain remote workers. Plus, she noted that over 90% of cyberattacks start with a phishing email yet only 53% of medium and small businesses use mail encryption.  With a remote work force highly reliant on email communications, security is more important now than ever.  Microsoft in the 365 realm offers extensive security options although over 52% of IT directors and executives are unaware of these features.

All of the panelists agreed that the abundance of security features within the Microsoft framework are largely underutilized by most organizations.  Simply running and applying action items around Secure Score are a way to get started with these features.

Most used are:

  • Secure Score
  • Advanced Threat Protection
  • Mock Threat Sessions with executive and management teams
